ZSL Archives has recently received a donation of correspondence relating to Abraham Dee Bartlett. Abraham Dee Bartlett (1812-1897) became Superintendent of ZSL London Zoo in 1859. He became an authority on the care of wild animals and published papers in the ‘Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London’. After his death in 1897, his son Clarence, who had been Assistant Superintendent at the Zoo, took his position as Superintendent.
The donation primarily comprises correspondence between Bartlett and Charles Jamrach of Jamrach’s Emporium. Jamrach was a ‘Dealer in all kinds of live and dead foreign birds, quadrapeds and reptiles’.
Also included are newspaper cuttings and photographs regarding a visit by Nasrulla Khan, shazada of Afghanistan, to ZSL London Zoo, a flyer from Cross, the ‘Largest importers of beasts, birds and reptiles on earth, Liverpool’, and an inventory titled ‘Mr Bartlett’s Butterflies’ by Edward W Janson. Two portraits of Abraham Dee Bartlett have also been received.
The correspondence and other items were kindly donated from the estate of Marilyn Ruth Archbold, the Great Great Great Grandaughter of Abraham Dee Bartlett.
